When your locs are feeling dry, brittle, or dull, it’s usually because they’re not getting enough moisture—and not just oil, but actual hydration. The trick is to hydrate first, then seal that moisture in so your hair stays soft and healthy.
Start with Water
Moisturizing always starts with water. Think of it like your skin—if it's dry, you don't just slap on lotion without washing or wetting it first. Your locs are the same.
You can use a spray bottle with distilled water, or go even better with rose water or aloe vera juice. Lightly mist your locs from root to tip. You don’t need to soak them—just enough so they feel refreshed.
Seal in the Moisture
Right after misting, apply a natural oil to lock that moisture in.
Some great options are:
Jojoba oil – lightweight and similar to your scalp’s natural oils
Argan oil – adds shine without being heavy
Grapeseed oil – great if you want something super light
Or a little bit of whipped shea butter if your hair is extra dry
You can also use a light, water-based leave-in conditioner (just make sure it doesn’t cause buildup).
How Often to Moisturize
Every head of locs is different, but every 2–3 days is a good place to start. If your hair feels dry in between, you can mist more often—just keep it light.
At Night: Wrap It Up
Sleeping on cotton can suck the moisture right out of your hair. So, wrap your locs in a satin or silk scarf or use a satin pillowcase to help keep that moisture in and prevent breakage or frizz.
Keep It Light—No Heavy Products
Avoid heavy waxes, thick creams, or anything that’ll clog up your locs. Once buildup gets in there, it’s hard to get out without deep cleansing or potentially damaging your locs
Quick DIY Moisture Spray (for everyday use):
½ cup distilled water
½ cup aloe vera juice
1 teaspoon of your favorite oil
A few drops of essential oil (like lavender or tea tree)
Shake well before each use, spray it on your locs, then seal it in with a light oil.
