How to get rid of oily skin

Oily skin is mainly caused by overactive sebaceous (oil) glands that produce too much sebum. Here are the key factors behind it:

1. Genetics

If your parents have oily skin, you’re more likely to have it too.

2. Hormones

Hormonal fluctuations (like during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or due to PCOS) can increase oil production.

Androgens (male hormones present in all genders) stimulate oil glands.

3. Climate

Hot, humid environments can make skin produce more oil.

Even in winter, dehydration can trigger your skin to overcompensate by producing more oil.

4. Skincare Habits

Over-washing or using harsh products can strip your skin, causing it to produce more oil.

Not moisturizing can also trigger more oil production as your skin tries to rehydrate itself.

5. Diet

High-glycemic foods (like sugar and white bread) and dairy may contribute to excess oil and acne in some people.

6. Stress

Stress increases cortisol, which can stimulate more oil production.

While you can't completely eliminate oily skin, you can definitely manage it and reduce excess oil. Here are some steps to help control and balance your oily skin:

1. Follow a Consistent Skincare Routine

Use a gentle cleanser: Cleanse twice a day with a foaming or gel cleanser that removes oil without stripping the skin.

Recommended: CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Gel.

Toner: Apply an alcohol-free toner with ingredients like witch hazel, salicylic acid, or niacinamide to balance oil levels.

Recommended: Paula’s Choice Pore-Reducing Toner, The Ordinary Glycolic Acid (use 2-3x a week).

Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs hydration! Use a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer.

Recommended: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat.

Sunscreen: Always apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage.

Recommended: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, Biore UV Aqua Rich.

2. Use Exfoliants

Exfoliate 1–2 times a week using products with salicylic acid (a BHA) or glycolic acid (an AHA) to keep pores clear.

Recommended: The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2%, Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant.

3. Use Clay Masks

Clay masks absorb excess oil and help minimize the appearance of pores.

Recommended: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask (1–2 times a week).

4. Watch Your Diet

Limit sugar and dairy intake, as they can trigger excess oil production for some people.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.

5. Manage Stress

Practice stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, or exercise to help regulate hormone levels.

6. Avoid Over-Washing

Don’t wash your face more than twice a day—over-washing can strip your skin, leading to more oil production.

7. Use Oil-Free Makeup

Choose oil-free and non-comedogenic makeup products to prevent clogged pores and excess shine.

Recommended: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Foundation, Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup.

These steps can help you manage oily skin, but it may take some time to see consistent results.
